Néroli - Princess of the South
Share
It is the name of the precious essential oil extracted from the beautiful blossoms of the #bitterorangetree (Citrus aurantium). So why the name? it's a princess's tale 👸.
Once upon a time, in the 17th century, Princess Anna Maria de la Tremoille of Nerola, a small city near Rome, fell in love with the scent of the bitter orange tree blossoms. She is believed to be the first to distill the flowers. The Princess of Nerola used the rare and expensive essence abundantly to perfume her gloves, her hair, her clothes, her bath.... so much so that she may have caused her Prince's bankruptcy.
The delicate white flowers are more commonly known as "orange blossoms", and their perfume is definitely a landmark of the oriental scents repertoire.
In case you were wondering.... yes, our traditional #orangeblossomwater is extracted from these same flowers. And NOW is the season for picking and distilling and it's all just magical!
Direction: South Lebanon where all kinds of citrus trees grow abundantly but this citrus is particular to our Eastern Mediterranean region. Here, you'll see men and women getting busy early in the morning, hand-picking the blossoms one by one, gathering them in baskets and buckets and pouring them in large jute bags. And the sweet citrussy perfume fills the air all around the plantations. The flowers are then distilled for hours to obtain Néroli Essential Oil and Orange Blossom Water.
Néroli essential oil is a precious tool in #aromatherapy. It is regulating to the mood and emotions and helps bring back balance and calm. Particularly useful in managing trauma, shock and grief. It is also regulating to the heart and helps manage many physical manifestations of anxiety.
In Lebanon, we know since forever, that the #orangeblossomwater will take us to sleep, calm our nerves and help us digest. Our "white coffee" after supper is not just a grandma remedy... it actually works.
