Lord Laurel of menjez
Share
You would have to reach the northern Lebanese-Syrian border, in the village of Menjez in Akkar, to meet this nobleman. This small village's name stems from the Syriac "Magnez" meaning " hidden treasure". And indeed, it is.
🌳
Our largest population of Laurel trees شجر الغار strives in the beautiful Black Forest of Menjez that stretches over 485,000m2. Laurus nobilis, as books call this noble tree, has always given the Mediterranean people so much. It's time we pay tribute.
🧴
In Lebanon, we traditionally extract Laurel Oil from its berry fruit. The oil is obtained from cold press extraction of the berries harvested at the end of summer. It is a powerful antibacterial which probably explains why it is widely used in the formulation of the traditional soap صابون الغار. But the Laurel berries oil is also a beautiful remedy for joint pains and arthritis.
🍃
The dried laurel leaf is widely used in cooking but is also regarded as a medicinal plant. When used in herbal teas, it aids digestion, bloating, helps manage blood sugar and acts as an antiseptic expectorant in respiratory illnesses.
🌿
Last but not least, Lord Laurel gives us a beautiful essential oil that is steam-distilled from its twigs and leaves late August to November. It is probably one of our favourite essential oils as it combines a beautiful complex fragrance. With its fresh, spicy and woody notes, this treasure in aromatherapy is a true panacea. It could have its own Instagram page! For now, let's remember how perfect it is for this season.
As we step into spring, Bay Laurel essential oil supports our change in energy level and brings us out of the fogginess of winter. It helps our lymph move around and decongests our tired lymph nodes. Bay Laurel essential oil will also soothe our lungs and reduce allergies.
