Olibanum or Frankincense, and Lebanon
Share
Incense, Frankincense, Olibanum, لبان, بخور. Different names for one of the world's oldest essences.
Although #frankincense is not produced in Lebanon, its story is intimately linked to our region and our country. Indeed, legends and history books tell the tales of caravans carrying incense, myrrh, spices and other precious goods from as far as China, India, Persia, the Arabian Peninsula and the Horn of Africa, through the Levant and to the Occident. The Incense road was intertwined with the Spice road and went via the snow-covered Mount Lebanon. It is said that the name Olibanum derives from the word "white" which in many ancient languages (arabic, phenician, greek, latin and hebrew) has the same etymological ancestor: libanos or libanus or leben. The "O" at the beginning of the word #Olibanum may have come from latin: Oleum for oil.
So the Incense road went through Lebanon but the aromatic resin is produced by a beautiful tree that thrives in the deserts of the Horn of Africa, Yemen and Oman: the Boswellia sacra (or Boswellia carterii) tree. When it is injured, the bark of the Boswellia tree produces an aromatic resin that helps it heal, prevent infections and repel insects and parasites. The pearly white resin drops are therefore produced by tapping the trees several times a year. Farmers and producers will harvest the resin when it hardens.
Frankincense (meaning pure incense in old french) has been used since the antique times in religious ceremonies and for embalming the dead. Its essence actually promotes spiritual consciousness, stills the mind, supports introspection, helps meditation and brings about mind-body connection.
So next time you feel ungrounded, unfocused, unable to connect with yourself or just unable to pray, do what our ancestors did: burn Incense or use the Frankincense essential oil in inhalation or massage.
